ETRO’s Messe de Minuit (launched in 1994) is a fragrance for those who love “Church Incense” fragrances. It is woody, balsamic, smoky and spicy. A scent you can meditate on, if that makes sense. At first whiff I can smell a sharp citrus zest that is very refreshing and cooling. As the lemons warms up on my skin, sweet myrrh mingles in and adds a touch of sweetness. The patchouli and cinnamon hang out in the background and add a subtle kick. Just enough spice that it leans occasionally towards being gourmand. In the drydown you are left with a lovely spicy-sweet-musky scent with a touch of dry woods. Absolutely captivating from start to finish! Messe de Minuit is a unique and intriguing fragrance with many interesting contrasts and nuances going on. It’s very personal.
For me, this is an interesting scent, as I usually gravitate towards woody – floral – citrus fragrances. I find incense to be lovely, but not usually something I want to wear on my skin. However, ETRO seems to have captured that comforting smell of burning incense – that sweet and spicy smokey smell that takes me back to my childhood, Sunday mass with my mother and aunt. Or better yet, if I think forward, I am reminded of my trips to Bali and the daily offerings to God (Hindu) called Canang Sari which includes lighting incense and placing it at the offering as the blessing is made. This is what makes me love this fragrance! It’s ability to take me back to a time of peace, comfort and ritual.
