These days we are becoming more and more concerned about not only what we put in our bodies but what we put on our skin as well. We are often asked if make-up could damage skin or cause premature aging.
The first thing to know is what kind of make-up you are buying. There are so many difference choices out there and price is not always an indication of “better”. The obvious answer is to know what is in the make-up you are buying. For example, talc is something that will dry out the skin so especially as we get older, it is better to avoid make-up with talc in it.
We hear so much about parabens and the studies are inconclusive. But if it is something that you are concerned about then ask and the make-up artist or consultant should know whether the product contains any. Be specific to the product as well, it may be in the mascara but not in any of the other products. Most reputable companies these days have to look into the ingredients they use because the cost to market and sell a product that may cause a future health risk far out ways the short-term sales benefit.
We are seeing more and more mineral make-ups being offered or products within regular make-up lines adding mineral components. The ingredients may be better for sensitive skin, cause fewer flare-ups for acne prone skin or for those with rosacea. With mineral make-ups, my biggest concern is that there is a claim for sun protection. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are both physical sun blocks, so a uniform application of mineral makeup will provide some sun protection. It is enough for day-to-day activities but if you are going to be spending any prolonged periods in the sun, you need to use a sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 30.
With make-up as with any aesthetic treatment, I always say: LESS IS MORE especially as we age. Makeup should enhance our skin, not mask it. Too much makeup emphasizes fine lines, wrinkles, and pores.
